Press Release: August 4, 2019

Speakers from various political parties and peoples organisations unanimously called for a united mass campaign amongst the people to highlight the grave flaws in the existing system of democracy and develop an alternative in which the people are truly empowered. They were participating in a Political Forum organised by the Lok Raj Sangathan today in Delhi under the theme “The 2019 Lok Sabha Elections once again reveal the necessity for renewal of democracy”.

Speakers pointed out that the 2019 General Elections and its results have once again raised questions of a fundamental nature regarding whose will has been expressed through these elections. They raised questions regarding the role of Election Commission and other institutions of the state, of money power, the monopoly controlled electronic media, social media, the open instigation of communal hatred and violence, criminalization of politics, interference of US imperialism etc. in bringing about these results in the Lok Sabha elections.

Speakers raised the important issue of how political parties who come to power have become a law unto themselves, and are not accountable to the people. They raised the issue of need for reforms in the system of elections.

They emphsised the necessity for the thoroughgoing renewal of democracy so that people can become the decision makers.
