All men and women on conscience must unitedly condemn in no uncertain terms the horrendous attack on Swami Agnivesh on July 17, 2018 in Jharkhand. Swami Agnivesh is well known for his defence of human rights across the length and breadth of India. The attack was staged by a mob of young men supposedly under the banner of a youth organization of the BJP.
The BJP has claimed that it had no role and has also joined the chorus in condemning the attack. That said, as the party in power, it should have done more to prevent such an attack from occurring, and also in toning down the rhetoric that has made such an attack possible. The pictures showing the condition of an elderly person after such an attack are shocking to the say the least.
Vitiating the atmosphere, spewing communal propaganda, and dividing the people on the basis of caste, religion and region have been the preferred method of the political parties of the establishment including the BJP and Congress. They have never hesitated to launch an attack on anyone defending the rights of those whose life and livelihood are attacked.
Not surprisingly, it is the tribal people and those who defend them who are now in the cross-hairs of attacks, as tribal people have historically been in the land where today minerals are found, and where agriculture and other spheres of the economy are set to expand. In such an atmosphere, when all other means are appearing to fail, an atmosphere of hate and fear are being created to meet the ends of the economic forces that seek to expand beyond present day frontiers.
Furthermore, as policies of the NDA Government stand exposed in the eyes of the millions of people, including the disaster of demonetization, the disaster of GST, and the whipping up of hate against sections of society, the solution offered by those behind these events is even more hate, even more terror, and even more disasters.
Let all those who are worried about the future of India take a stand that “an attack on one, is an attack on all”.
