Lok Raj Sangathan expresses its profound grief at the passing away of Mukul Sinha on May 12, 2014, at a hospital in Ahmedabad, at the age of 63. He was diagnosed with lung cancer about 6-7 months ago.
Alumni of IIT Kanpur, he worked in Physical Research Laboratories (PRL) Ahmedabad in the late seventies and early eighties. Together with other young activists in PRL, he took up the cause of the rights of workers in Ahmedabad and nearby areas. Like many other activists of his time, inspired by revolutionary zeal, he gave up his professional carrier and took up the cause of the liberation of the toiling masses from exploitation. Towards this end, he set up numerous organizations during his lifetime, including the New Socialist Movement. He earned a law degree in 1989, in order to better fight for the rights of workers.
When Gujarat burnt after Godhra in 2002, Mukul Sinha was amongst those men of conscience who took up the task of defending the victims of the communal holocaust, without fear for his life.
He played an important role in the legal battle surrounding the four cases of fake encounters, involving Sadiq Jamal, Ishrat Jahan, Sohrabuddin Sheikh and Tulsi Prajapati.
His NGO ‘Jan Sangharsh Manch’ took up labour issues, such as low wages of drivers and conductors of city and state transport corporations.
Lok Raj Sangathan expresses its deepest condolences to his dear wife Nijhari and son Pratik, as well as all the activists and comrades of Mukul Sinha.
