Over 2000 nurses belonging to Apollo Hospital, MMM Hospital and Fortis Malar hospitals went on strike in the first week of March, demanding better salary and working conditions. They have been sending their demands to their management since November-11, but there has been no response from the management. Finally unable to bear ever rising cost of living and exploitative working conditions, they were forced on to strike.
Makkalatchi Iyakkam (Lok Raj Sangathan) supported this just agitation of the nurses. Activists of Makkalatchi Iyakkam participated in the agitation of Apollo hospital nurses at their gate meeting. Activist of Makkalatchi Iyakkam denounced the management for their attacks on toiling nurses and extended warm support to the fighting nurses and other staff. There was a militant Dharna at Memorial Hall on 7th of March, near the central station. In this dharna both Apollo hosptial nurses and Fortis Malar hospital nurses participated and unitedly raised their voice against exploitation. Nurses also held a militant rally on 8th of March, the International women’s day from Rajarathnam stadium to Egmore. Over 1000 nurses from Apollo Main Hospital, Speciality Hospital at Teynampet, First Med-Kilpauk, Apollo hospital at Tondiarpet took part in this demonstration. Many nurses spoke at the rally. Amongst those who spoke were Raghuvara, Kanagaraj, Suganya, Ambedkar G. Makkalatchi Iyakkam has also brought out a leaflet in support of Nurses agitation. Leaflet was much appreciated by the nurses.
Nurses expressed their clear resolve and determination to win their demands and intensify their agitation till all their demands are met.
