HMIL workers have been on strike demanding the reinstatement of over 60 colleagues dismissed last year. The workers had been dismissed on trumped up charges for “gross misconduct leading to damage of company property and violence against fellow workers”.
But the real reason for the dismissals is different. The Chennai plant workers have been consistently fighting against the super exploitation of the Hyundai management. Due to frequent labour militancy in the Chennai plant in the past, production for the Europe market was shifted to Hyundai’s plant in Turkey. Last month, Hyundai Motor India MD and CEO HW Park went on record to say that industrial relations are proving to be a headache despite repeated conciliation efforts.
