SC verdict on Right to Privacy: Will the “legitimate aims” of the State come in the way of fulfilment of this right?

JudgementA nine-judge bench of the Supreme Court has recently passed a judgement that Indians enjoy a “fundamental right to privacy”. This right is intrinsic to the “right to life and liberty”. The judgement was in response to a petition filed by former Karnataka high court judge Justice K.S. Puttaswamy and others.

Sadak Par – A local movement for accountability in education!

In Thumbnailthe atmosphere of stark neglect that pervades the education infrastructure of Bihar, many students, almost all from poor, Dalit and Muslim families have been holding makeshift classes in protest in the streets of Bhojpur district which have now popularly become known as ‘Sadak Par’ schools. They have been protesting the poor and non-existent school facilities, including the lack of teachers, libraries, books, proper sanitation; caste-based discrimination and the overall state of neglect of government schools. Further, in a disturbing incident, Dalit students in a school in Agaion block were made to clean the school toilet with their own hands. Stirred to action, many people from these areas participated in the strident protests since mid-April.

Gauri Lankesh, was shot dead outside her home in Bengaluru yesterday night. She was a senior journalist, activist and had raised voices against the ruling establishment. Ms Lankesh's killing has triggered widespread anger amongst journalists, activists and rights organisations. Many protest meetings have been organized today across the country. Lok Raj Sangathan urges people to unite against all attempts to silence progressive people working for pro-people changes in society. It is only by getting organised and raising our voice that we can ensure that killers and the forces behind them are identified and held accountable for their crimes!

On deaths of children in Gorakhpur

As we go to press, the death toll of children has gone up to 70 children die in Gorakhpur72 in the Baba Raghav Das Medical College Hospital, in Gorakhpur, UP. As news of the deaths came in, the UP CM, and officials have all been misinforming the public on the real cause of these unnecessary deaths. Lack of Oxygen is cited a cause, while it is also being said that it was due to uncontrollable encephalitis. The opposition has also jumped in and suddenly all political leaders are showing “great concern” for the children of the poorest of poor families.
