On April 9, the Election Commission (EC) announced the cancellation of the by elections to RK Nagar assembly constituency in Chennai. This seat in the Tamilnadu Assembly had fallen vacant after the death of former chief minister Jayalalithaa. The Commission cited bribing of voters and flouting of election laws by contesting parties for putting off the election. The new date would be announced in due course, the EC said.

On Monday, 3rd April 2017, the Delhi High Court refused to stay the decision of the Delhi State poll panels’ decision of not allotting a common symbol to all candidates of Swaraj India, a relatively newly formed political party which wants to contest the upcoming Municipal Elections in Delhi.

With booze, biriyani, coupons, cash and now coffin RK Nagar election is descending to deep decadence. Hoards of ECI observers, mini observers, flying squads and paramilitary forces who have descended on the Constituency has made a mockery of democracy. Please initiate immediate steps to countermand the polls there.

Lok Raj Sangathan organized a round-table discussion on the burning topic: “Thorough-going reforms in the political system and process needed”. Following the just concluded assembly elections to five states – U.P., Manipur, Uttarakhand, Punjab and Goa, the discussion brought out a great degree of unanimous concern among the various participant groups and individuals, on how people are completely marginalized in India, which is touted as the world’s most populous democracy.

Amidst  severe doubts expressed by leaders of political parties who  lost the Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab (BahujanSamaj Party and the AamAadmi Party) about the possible rigging of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), the Election Commission of India (ECI) has emphatically supported the machines. It has dismissed the allegations as speculative and wild.The poll panel also asserted that it had not received specific complaints or concrete material from political parties and candidates about alleged tampering of EVMs during the recent elections.

Election results from the five states which recently went for assembly polls have been overwhelmingly in favour of BJP. The party has been able to form governments in 4 of the 5 states. But there have been widespread allegations that the results have been manipulated through EVMs.

The Congress, BSP, SP and AAP have complained to the Election Commission (EC) that EVMs were tampered. In response the EC is holding high level consultations to “put in place a proper strategy to reinforce the credibility of EVMs”.
