ThumbnailAt the outset, I compliment the organisers of this Convention. This large gathering reflects how LRS has grown, and the presence of so many youngsters shows how we have developed and the need to fight for true democracy.

Today we have a democracy that reflects that even after 70 years, 77 per cent of the people are poor, and large numbers have no health care, no education. Our Constitution says that it is for the people, but what is the reality? Can we call the current system a real democracy?

“Hung Delhi Assembly – and games parties play”
Lok Raj Sangathan demands immediate elections in Delhi and accountability of elected representatives to people!

A vibrant atmosphere prevailed in the hall at the Indian Social Institute, as several hundreds of youth (who have voted for the first time this year) and adult men and women, who all wanted to have their say on what should be the future political scene in Delhi. Will the problems of the people get sorted out if and when a govt. comes into place? Or will this ever happen when people have no choice in what kind of govt. they should have, when their votes have not been considered important nor of any consequence.

Posters bearing this intriguing question and the sight of the “32 Idiots” standing on the beach with concern writ largely on their faces appeared in several places in V.G.Vaze College, Mumbai in the last week of July. Alongside were invitations by the Students’ Council of the College, the Science Association as well as the NSS to attend a discussion on “Development for Whom? Who Pays? Who Gains?” in the college auditorium. As the students went around, inviting their associates as well aas teachers and non-teaching staff, a buzz was generated in the college. Many teachers took strong for and against positions on the anti-nuclear movement that has been going on in the country in general and in Maharashtra in particular regarding Jaitapur nuclear power project.

We joined our professor and others from the Lok Raj Sangathan on a tour to Tarapur, the site of India’s first ever nuclear power plant. 40 eager souls, on a mission to uncover the truth! We were accompanied by two activists who are fighting against nuclear plants.
