LRS condemns brutal attack on people by the Gujarat government!

Lakhs of youth and their families held a mammoth rally in Ahmedabad, Gujarat on August 25, demanding access to higher education and government jobs. Far from addressing the legitimate demands of the people, the government of Gujarat carried out a series of provocations to deliberately inflame the situation. This included arresting the leaders of the protest, turning off the lights in the rally ground, and lathi charging and firing upon protestors. The police went on a rampage breaking into the homes of people, beating up men, women and children indiscriminately. In this reign of terror unleashed by the state, at least 8 people are reported to have lost their lives and hundreds injured. The Central Government has placed Ahmedabad and other cities of the state of Gujarat under the rule of the Army and paramilitary forces, allegedly to maintain “law and order”. Once more a political problem has been turned into a “law and order problem”.

Lok Raj Sangathan strongly condemns the passing of the Gujarat Control of Terrorism and Organised Crime Bill 2015 by the state assembly. The legislation is similar to the dreaded POTA and TADA. Under the Act, the police can keep a person in custody for 30 days without trial. It also gives the police 180 days to file a charge. This means that a person can be detained upto 180 days merely on the basis of phone records. Offences under the Act are non-bailable.

Exactly a decade after an estimated 97 people were killed in a massacre at Naroda Patiya area of Ahmedabad, during the 2002 Gujarat genocide, a special court has sentenced 31 people to life imprisonment. The highlight of the sentence is that the guilty include sitting BJP Member of Legislative Assembly and former Minister in the Narendra Modi government, Maya Kodnani. It should be recalled that she was appointed minister for Women and Child Welfare just two months after supervising the rape and murder of nearly a hundred women, children and men!
